Arm Lift

Arm Lift in Long Island with Dr. Meredith Vandegrift

Weight fluctuations, aging, sun damage, or even genetic issues can cause the skin of the upper arms to stretch and sag. Once the skin has been stretched out, loss of elasticity can prevent it from resuming its original position, leaving sagging, drooping skin behind. The upper arms can be a notoriously difficult area of the body to tone through weight loss and exercise because of loose skin. However, with an arm lift, sagging skin that impacts the appearance of the upper arms can be eliminated to reveal slim, toned, and contoured arms.

You deserve a knowledgeable, compassionate body contouring plastic surgeon who will help you achieve beautiful results. Helping patients accomplish their aesthetic goals safely and effectively is what makes board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Meredith Vandegrift stand out as one the best brachioplasty surgeons in Long Island.

What Is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a body contouring procedure that aims to reshape the upper arms by eliminating extra skin, tissue, and fat. By combining liposuction and surgical excision to remove excess loose skin, brachioplasty rejuvenates arms for a slender, more youthful appearance and improved muscle tone.

During an arm lift, Dr. Vandegrift will use liposuction to address the excess fat from the upper arms, and then she will create an incision on the back or inside of the upper arm to excise the extra skin and tissue. To provide optimal results, Dr. Vandegrift may need to remove excess tissue from the side of the chest or the underarm area. When the skin is reconnected, results are visible immediately.

What Are the Benefits of Arm Lift?

Whether your drooping, sagging upper arms are from aging, weight loss, or genetics, don’t lose hope of accomplishing the toned arms of your dreams! Boost your confidence and restore your body image when you improve the appearance of your upper arms.

On the upper arms, skinfolds can cause physical discomfort or other concerns, such as:

  • Rashes
  • Skin irritation
  • Risk of infection
  • Decreased physical activity
  • Hygienic concerns
  • Diminished self-confidence and poor body image

With the best brachioplasty in Long Island, Dr. Vandegrift helps to resolve these issues by eliminating sagging, drooping upper arm skin. An arm lift redefines the shape of the upper arms by tightening and smoothing the underlying tissues and addressing excess skin and pockets of stubborn fat.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Brachioplasty?

Good candidates for an arm lift are women and men who are self-conscious about their upper arms due to sagging, loose skin or stubborn fat deposits. An arm lift is beneficial to patients who are looking to restore firmness and the slender appearance of their upper arms after losing a significant amount of weight or elasticity in their skin.

Candidates for brachioplasty should:

  • Be generally healthy
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Life a healthy lifestyle and be close to their ideal weight
  • Be non-smokers, or willing to quit prior to their procedure
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook
  • Understand the risks of the procedure

As arm lift surgery and liposuction are body contouring procedures rather than weight loss procedures, they will not result in significant weight loss. Patients considering brachioplasty to address excess sagging arm skin should be at or near their ideal weight.

What Can I Expect During an Arm Lift Procedure?

To achieve the best results for each patient, Dr. Vandegrift develops customized treatment plans for each brachioplasty. However, here are some general steps to expect.

Prior to Your Procedure

In the weeks before your arm lift surgery, Dr. Vandegrift will recommend that you:

  • Avoid supplements containing fish oil, ginkgo, garlic, vitamin A, or vitamin E for two weeks
  • Avoid all medications that thin the blood, including over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, for a week
  • Avoid consuming alcohol for 24 to 48 hours
  • Consume a healthy, high-protein, low-sodium diet
  • Stop smoking, vaping, or using any other nicotine products for at least 4 weeks before and after the procedure

Check-in

Once you arrive, you will be greeted by our team. Dr. Vandegrift will make sure you are comfortable and answer any last questions and make surgical markings. Then, you’ll receive anesthesia before Dr. Vandegrift begins your arm lift surgery.

Brachioplasty Procedure

If necessary, Dr. Vandegrift will address excess fat by performing liposuction first. Small incisions are made in the treatment area to insert a cannula to extract fat. Then, Dr. Vandegrift will create incisions along the back or inside of the arm. From these incisions, Dr. Vandegrift will remove the extra skin, tissue, and fat.

Once the excess tissues have been removed, Dr. Vandegrift will reposition the skin and reconnect it for a smoother contour and slender, trim arms.

Arm Lift Aftercare

As an arm lift is an outpatient procedure, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home from the hospital and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

Following an arm lift, most patients experience some bruising and swelling. These effects typically resolve within a few weeks. You may be required to wear compression garments for two to four weeks to minimize swelling and aid in recovery.

Most patients plan on taking at least one week off before returning to work. During your recovery, you will need to avoid strenuous activities, including exercise and heavy lifting, for at least four to six weeks. You should begin slowing walking as soon as you’re feeling well enough.

How Soon Will I See My Arm Lift Results?

Most patients will see visible results immediately following an arm lift. However, you may also experience swelling and bruising that obscures your results for up to four to six weeks. True results are typically visible in three to six months following the procedure.

Following your brachioplasty, you can expect to enjoy long-lasting results by maintaining your stable weight through a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Age and gravity may still cause loss of firmness after some time.
