Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation in Long Island With Dr. Meredith Vandegrift

One of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. and at our Long Island office is breast augmentation. Many women desire fuller breasts, and breast implants are an ideal way to achieve this goal.

While many plastic surgery practices offer breast surgery, few doctors provide the compassionate care that Dr. Meredith Vandegrift has built her reputation on. She believes that surgeons and patients must partner to achieve the desired results and to create an environment where the patient feels safe and supported throughout the surgical process.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation?

Patients who want larger breasts can achieve this aim through breast augmentation. This procedure can also correct some breast deformities, including asymmetry and tubular breasts.

Breast augmentation enhances the breasts’ size by placing implants into the breast tissue. The implants provide additional volume and shape to the breast. Dr. Vandegrift uses many different types (saline, silicone, and cohesive silicone gel or gummy bear implants); shapes (round or anatomical); and sizes of breast implants to create a customizable result.

It’s possible to place breast implants over or under the pectoral muscle. There are advantages to both options, and Dr. Vandegrift can provide personalized recommendations after she has examined your breasts and spoken with you about your lifestyle and aesthetic goals.

After Dr. Vandegrift places your desired implants into your breasts, she will suture the incisions closed and dress them. The implants will remain inside your breasts until you choose to have them removed. Many patients enjoy their breast implants for many years.

Saline or Silicone: Understanding Your Breast Implant Options

Modern breast implants come in many shapes and sizes. They also come in different types – specifically, saline, silicone, and cohesive silicone gel. One of the first decisions each patient makes in preparing for breast augmentation is choosing between saline and silicone breast implants.

All breast implants feature a durable, long-lasting outer shell crafted from medical-grade silicone. The difference between saline and silicone breast implants is what is inside. Saline breast implants have a sterile saline filling, while silicone implants have a soft, silicone gel filling inside. Cohesive silicone implants also have a silicone filling, but it is a thicker, more consistent material. These implants have a similar texture to a gummy bear, hence their nickname “gummy bear implants.”

Saline breast implants tend to be the most affordable choice for breast augmentation, costing less than a similarly sized silicone implant. They also require smaller incisions because Dr. Vandegrift positions empty shells into the breasts before filling them. Saline breast implants are FDA-approved for cosmetic use in women who are at least 18 years old.

Silicone gel breast implants are the most popular type of breast implant. They feel almost identical to natural breast tissue, even outside the breast. Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for use in patients aged 22+.

Cohesive silicone gel implants, or gummy bear breast implants, are the newest option available for breast augmentation. Cohesive gel implants consist of a thick, form-stable silicone gel. These implants hold their shape very well. If they rupture, the silicone gel should remain intact and not leak into the breast tissue.

All three types of breast implants have benefits. Dr. Vandegrift will help you select the breast implant type that best meets your needs. In some cases, your unique anatomy may limit possibilities for implant size and type. Choosing a breast implant that works with your body type is a must for safe and natural-looking results.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure. Patients will need to rest and take it easy for several days after surgery. Since this procedure is usually outpatient, most of the recovery will happen at home. Dr. Vandegrift meets with breast augmentation patients several times in the postsurgical phase to monitor the healing process.

Most patients miss one to two weeks of work after breast augmentation. You may require more or less time, depending on the nature of your job and your ability to modify daily tasks. We advise patients to limit strenuous activities like running and heavy lifting for about six weeks after surgery.

Tenderness, swelling, and bruising are common during the recovery process. Dr. Vandegrift may provide a prescription for pain medication (if needed) and can advise on using over-the-counter options to reduce discomfort for a more comfortable recovery.

FAQ

Breast Augmentation in Long Island, NY

There are several different options for breast incision placement. The most common incision for breast augmentation occurs under the breast, in the fold where the base of the breast meets the chest wall. Dr. Vandegrift may also opt to place incisions in the armpits or around the areolas. All three incision locations are ideal for hiding any scarring. After the incisions heal, scarring is nearly invisible due to careful placement.

Breast augmentation enhances the breasts’ size and shape, but does not address breast sagging. Women with sagging may want to combine their breast augmentation with a breast lift, a procedure that restructures the breast tissue into a more youthful shape. Dr. Vandegrift can perform a breast augmentation and a lift at the same time.

Breast implants are typically very long-lasting. Many patients will enjoy their implants for years, sometimes even decades.

There are advantages to both options. Dr. Vandegrift can advise you on the best implant type for your situation after examining your breasts.

Women of any age can get cosmetic breast augmentation. Many women choose to get breast implants in their late teens (18+) and early 20s to enhance a small breast size or to address breast deformities or asymmetry. Women also turn to breast implants to restore breast volume after pregnancy and childbirth, often including this procedure in a mommy makeover. Women in their 40s and 50s may choose breast implants to revitalize aging breasts. Whatever your age, if you want to enhance your breasts, ask Dr. Vandegrift about cosmetic breast augmentation.

Many women successfully breastfeed after breast augmentation. Breastfeeding challenges are always possible, with or without breast implants. If you hope to breastfeed in the future, let Dr. Vandegrift know before your procedure.
