What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also called a reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the breasts by removing skin, fat, and breast tissue. The breasts are lifted and reshaped, creating a smaller, tighter, and firmer breast.

Breast reduction surgery can change lives. Our patients experience many benefits from this procedure. Benefits of breast reduction include:

  • Improvement in body proportions
  • Increased ability to participate in exercise and physical activities
  • Reduction in back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Better clothing fit and more clothing possibilities
  • People see you, not just your breasts

Breast reduction surgery is ideal for patients that feel overpowered or weighed down by large, cumbersome breasts. If your breast size is causing physical or emotional discomfort, it is time to explore breast surgery with an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Vandegrift.

To attain the best possible results, Dr. Vandegrift can perform breast reduction surgery techniques including:

Excess breast tissue, skin, and fat are removed through the incisions. Sometimes liposuction is used to remove additional fat and to sculpt the breast shape. After the fat and glandular tissue removal is complete, the breast is reshaped and repositioned. The size of the areola may be reduced by trimming away excess from the outer edge if needed.

Incisions are sutured closed to hold the reshaped breast in position. The breasts are wrapped with compressive bandaging.

After a short period of monitoring in our recovery center, patients can return home. We’ll provide detailed recovery and aftercare instructions. Patients return to our office to meet with Dr. Vandegrift several times during the recovery process.

FAQ

Breast Reduction in Long Island

Modern breast reduction techniques preserve many of the milk ducts, allowing many women to successfully breastfeed after breast reduction surgery. If you’re hoping to breastfeed in the future, let Dr. Vandegrift know so she can discuss breastfeeding and potential complications with you in more depth.

Most patients have some visible scarring after breast reduction surgery, but thanks to advanced incision closure techniques, this scarring should be minimal. At first, incisions will be dark and prominent on the breasts, but as the skin, fat and breast tissue heals, scars become lighter and less visible. Most patients tell us the improvement in their quality of life is well worth any scarring that occurs. Aesthetically, most patients also report greater satisfaction with their new breast shape, even if some scarring does occur.

After breast reduction surgery, your breasts will immediately appear smaller and more youthful. At first, incisions will be dark and very visible, but over time, as the incisions fade, the appearance of the breasts will continue to improve. Most patients see full results about a year after breast reduction procedures.

Some insurance policies may pay a portion of the costs toward breast reduction, provided certain conditions are met. It can be a challenge to coordinate insurance coverage for this policy,  but we have been very successful getting many of our patents covered for this life-altering procedure. Talk with your insurance carrier for complete coverage details.

Breast reduction can dramatically reduce the size of your breasts, but this procedure isn’t one-size-fits-all. You’ll work with Dr. Vandegrift to determine your desired breast size. We consider your aesthetic goals and the size of your body to create breasts that are comfortable and proportionate to your frame.

The timing required for breast reduction surgery varies, but a typical procedure takes  around 3 hours.

Plastic surgery is highly customized, making it difficult to estimate the costs of a procedure without an in-person meeting first. We’ll provide a detailed estimate for your breast reduction surgery with Dr. Vandegrift during your consultation.
