Eyelid Surgery Long Island, NY

Bring your eyes out of hiding. Blepharoplasty, also called eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure to smooth, lift, and rejuvenate the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Meredith Vandegrift offers this procedure on its own or paired with other facial rejuvenation surgeries like facelift or brow lift

If sagging eyelids are hiding your baby blues (or browns or greens or hazels), come see Dr. Vandegrift and explore eyelid surgery with our board-certified plastic surgeon. Contact our office online or call (631) 935-0303 to learn more or schedule a consultation at Vandegrift Plastic Surgery today.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Sagging eyelids are a common effect of the aging process. An eyelid lift addresses these age-related changes to the eyelid area. A rejuvenated appearance is created by removing excess skin and adjusting fat levels in the upper or lower eyelids.

Eyelid surgery doesn’t address dark circles or crow’s feet but can be paired with other cosmetic treatments like laser resurfacing, dermal fillers, or Botox® if these issues are present. Dr. Vandegrift works with each patient to create a rejuvenation plan that addresses their specific areas of concern.

Eyelid surgery can address:

  • Puffiness on the upper or lower eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Wrinkles on the eyelids
  • Drooping upper eyelids (ptosis surgery)

Treating aging in the eyelid areas can help patients enjoy a refreshed and youthful appearance.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure: What to Expect

Eyelid surgery is typically performed under local or general anesthesia at our surgical center. This procedure may be paired with other facial surgeries. On its own, an eyelid lift typically takes between 1-2 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether the procedure is being performed on one or both eyelids.

When you arrive on surgery day, you’ll meet briefly with Dr. Vandegrift and the surgical team to prepare for surgery. Numbing medications, anesthesia, or IV sedation will be used to prepare for the surgical process. Once you’re comfortably resting, Dr. Vandegrift will place incisions that allow for skin removal and tissue tightening in the eyelid area. These incisions may be placed along the crease of the upper eyelid, inside of the lower eyelid, or along the lash line.

Excess skin and fat are removed, and underlying facial tissues are tightened through the incisions. After the desired results are achieved, Dr. Vandegrift will suture the incisions closed using specialized techniques to minimize visible scarring. Ointment may be applied to the eyelid area and moist dressing may be placed over the eyes while you’re in recovery. When you’re ready to return home, the eyes are carefully bandaged.

Recovery After an Eyelid Surgery in Long Island

Patients will need someone to drive them home after surgery, as the eyes may be blurry and sensitive to light. The majority of patients are ready to return home on the same day as their surgery.

At home, patients follow very specific recovery instructions to ensure their new incisions can heal properly. You’ll return to our office several times during recovery when Dr. Vandegrift and our team will assess healing and answer questions. We’ll be your partners throughout the recovery process and are available to help each patient with questions and concerns while they heal.

Most patients heal quickly after eyelid surgery, with many being physically ready to return to work after about a week. It may take 2-3 weeks for bruising and swelling to resolve.

FAQ

Long Island Blepharoplasty

The cost of eyelid surgery will depend on several factors, including the extent of your procedure, any additional surgeries performed, and whether we are improving the upper and/or lower eyelids. Due to the customized nature of plastic surgery, it is impossible to provide an estimate without first meeting with Dr. Vandegrift in person. Scheduling a consultation means you’ll receive a personalized quote when you meet with Dr. Vandegrift.

The eyelids are a visible area, and many patients worry about scarring. Dr. Vandegrift carefully places each incision to minimize scar visibility. Since incisions are placed along natural creases or lash lines, they are often hidden once they are fully healed. It can take scars some time to fade, so some patients will choose to use camouflaging makeup temporarily.

Eyelid surgery can permanently improve the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids. Although the natural aging process continues, the removal of loose skin and fat will always leave the eyelids with a more youthful appearance than they would have without surgery. Most patients will not require additional eyelid surgery.

Upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty are often conducted together. These procedures can be paired with other facial rejuvenation treatments, too.

An eyelid lift won’t negatively impact your eyesight, but it may improve it. Some patients find that lifting the upper eyelid out of the field of vision can open the eye and improve vision. You may temporarily experience dry or watery eyes and blurry vision after surgery, but this should improve within a few days.

If you’re considering upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both, schedule a consultation with Dr. Vandegrift to determine if you’re a good candidate for blepharoplasty eyelid surgery. Meeting with our board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to determine if cosmetic surgery is a safe option for you and if it will meet your desired objectives. The best candidates for eyelid surgery are experiencing droopy eyelids or sagging of the upper or lower eyelids. Patients should have good overall health and realistic expectations for surgery. If you’re considering plastic surgery and currently smoke, stop using nicotine products as soon as possible, as they can interfere with healing and create complications.
