An eyelid lift, also called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that refreshes the appearance of the eye area. By removing excess skin, tissue, and fat from the upper or lower eyelids, this procedure can open up the eyes, wake up a tired or angry appearance, and refresh contours for a more youthful facial appearance.
An eyelid lift transforms the eyelids, but what happens to the rest of the eye area? Can an eyelid lift change the shape of the eyes?
Could I Benefit from an Eyelid Lift?
Blepharoplasty is ideal for patients who are experiencing age-related changes to the eye area. Eyelid surgery can smooth puffiness or bags under the eyes, tighten wrinkles on the upper or lower eyelids, and lift sagging eyelids. Often patients notice an improvement in their vision after eyelid surgery because their sagging upper eyelids are no longer blocking the eyes.
Eyelid surgery doesn’t treat wrinkles around the eyes, only on the eyelids. If you want to fade your crow’s feet, you’ll need to pair your eyelid surgery with Botox or dermal fillers.
If you’re ready to refresh the eyes, explore eyelid surgery with Dr. Meredith Vandegrift to find out if you’re a good candidate for this procedure.
What Happens During Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery is customized to address your eye concerns. Dr. Vandegrift may operate on the upper or lower eyelids (or both). You’ll receive anesthesia (local or general) to keep you comfortable during the surgery. Then Dr. Vandegrift will make the needed incisions for your procedure. Blepharoplasty incisions are typically placed in the crease of the upper eyelid, along the lash line, or inside of the lower eyelid.
Skin and excess fat are removed, and the eyelids are tightened until the desired results are achieved. Finally, Dr. Vandegrift will suture the incision closed using special techniques to minimize scarring.
Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, which typically takes 1-2 hours. When your surgery is finished, you’ll be monitored in our comfortable recovery area until you’re ready to return home.
Will an Eyelid Lift Change the Shape of My Eyes?
Eyelid surgery does not fundamentally change the shape of the eyes. Your eyes will look refreshed and enhanced, but their basic shape remains similar. After eyelid surgery, round eyes are still round, and almond eyes remain almond-shaped.
The biggest changes following blepharoplasty happen to the eyelids. Your eyelids will be smoother with refreshed contours. We like to think of eyelid surgery as a time machine for your eyes. Remember what your eyes looked like 10 years ago? They should look similar to this after surgery.
Optimizing Your Features with Facial Plastic Surgery
An eyelid lift won’t turn your almond eyes into round, doe eyes, but that’s a good thing. Your facial features are unique and beautiful, just like you. Dr. Vandegrift’s goal with plastic surgery is to enhance what you have, not turn you into someone else.
After eyelid surgery, you’ll still look like you, but the best version of you possible. Request your consultation by calling (631) 935-0303.
